The American Express Membership Rewards is a program in which it rewards its customers with points instead of money.  There is no limit to the amount of points you can buy, and you never have to worry about them expiring.  The main difference between this rewards program and others like it is that if you choose to enroll in the Membership Rewards program, it may require you to pay a fee.

With this reward program, you can earn points to spend on a variety of different things that American Express is offering.  The points can help you earn various gift cards, travel perks (like round trip tickets to exotic places and even a trip on a sub-orbital space flight), airline rewards and more.  The only thing left to figure out now is if these rewards are worth it in the end and if there are any catches you might find yourself in.

The best American Express Membership rewards that are available and would most likely be used the most are the airline miles.  When flying to various locations, these miles it can take to arrive there will be converted to a price value, which will then equal an amount of points towards that trip.  These points add up.  This will let you covert these points later which can be used towards purchasing gifts or converted towards the price of another ticket.  If you have enough points saved up, it is possible you can actually “fly for free.”

Most reward programs will give you an option to get a cash check or statement credit.  The problem with this certain program is that American Express doesn’t offer these things.  Instead, they offer you the ability to use the points to pay for everyday expenses.  With benefits like this, you would expect to see restrictions, and this is true with this reward program.  Instead of buying what you want, like when you use a credit card, you must purchase only what American Express deems an everyday expense.

The American Express Membership Rewards program will also not let you buy points, but instead, will let you borrow them towards future spending.  If the program is new to you, it would be worth looking even more into so that you can make the decision for yourself whether or not it is worth it in the end.  With gift cards available from places like Macy’s and other retailers, these rewards do seem to have their perks.
